Most dental whitening gels contain hydrogen peroxide or, like Smile Perfected, carbamide peroxide (which quickly breaks down into hydrogen peroxide). When applied to teeth, the hydrogen peroxide breaks down to release free radicals, short-lived and reactive molecules. These free radicals bind to tooth structures and whiten the teeth from the inside by oxidizing stains and dark spots in the enamel.

Whitening results are dependent on the patient’s lifestyle choices. Drinking dark drinks like coffee, pop, and red wines will darken your teeth with time. Smoking also darkens teeth. After completion of a whitening treatment, it is recommended to minimize these lifestyle choices to help keep your smile whiter for longer. Smile Perfected whitening treatment also includes a take-home kit to help you maintain your new bright smile.

For the vast majority of patients, Smile Perfected whitening causes little to no sensitivity, but this can differ from patient to patient. If you do encounter sensitivity following whitening treatment, know that it is temporary and will resolve quickly. If necessary, sensitivity toothpaste can help minimize sensitivity.
